It is with profound sorrow we announce that our beloved Kate Pittard - saxophone venus, zabumba enthusiast, sister-singer-songwriter, and co-mother of Gringa - has transitioned out of this world and joined the cosmic bloom. She peacefully passed away in Santa Fe, NM on Sunday, Nov 18, 2018 after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Gringa exists because of Kate. Her loving support of women musicians and songwriters, her playful curiosity and enthusiasm for Brazilian music, her encouragement to fearlessly explore new and unfamiliar creative territory, her stellar sax solos that elevated our music to greater heights, her glowing positive energy that inspired everyone around her... Kate is the soul of this sonic endeavor, and it is safe to say that Gringa will not be the same without her.

Rest in Power, Kate. Thank you for planting this seed and nourishing it with your light and love. You made the world a better place and we are eternally grateful to know you. Your spirit will live on forever.

Viva Kaytchee!

After a brief personal travel hiatus (what can we say, we've all got wanderlust), Gringa is back in action booking shows and cooking up new music for ya'll. We recently participated in NPR's Tiny Desk Contest as an opportunity to arrange and record a new song we're really excited to share with you. It's called "Violence Underneath" and examines issues of systemic violence and the need to protest. Please watch it and let us know what you think in the comments. If you like it, please Subscribe to our YouTube channel! Thanks, WE LOVE YOU!!

Gringa Plays a Benefit Show at Ashkenaz in Berkeley
We wanted to remind you of a special event we're playing tonight at Ashkenaz, in Berkeley (1317 San Pablo Ave) that benefits the victims of the environmental disaster that recently happened in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In case you hadn't heard, on Nov. 5 a wall of toxic mud flooded the fishing village of Bento Rodrigues and the Rio Doce river when an iron ore dam collapsed. The catastrophe, dubbed the "Brazilian Fukushima", has ruined the water source and way of life for an estimated quarter million people, and will take many years to recover. All proceeds from tonight's show will help provide victims with legal assistance in their struggle against Samarco Mineração SA, the company whose negligence reportedly caused the disaster. We aim to bring awareness to this issue and justice to those affected through a night of music and dance.

The party also features percussion ensemble Maracatu Pacífico, Chico Science Tribute Band Mangrove Express and a dance class starting at 8:30pm.

We go on at 9:30pm and hope to see you there!
Gringatag:www.gringamusic.com,2005:Post/39108232015-11-02T23:00:06-08:002017-01-16T08:07:08-08:00Our first single, "I'ma Build a Home"!We are very excited to announce the release of our first single, "I'ma Build a Home", on November 12, 2015!

This song, written several years ago by Maya, was inspired by her relationship with a guy named Plinio in Salvador, Brazil, and is told through his point of view. It was originally recorded with the band TropiCali, and we'd like to thank members of that band who contributed drums, bass, or percussion on the recording: Paulo Presotto, Fabio Reis, Roberto Rios, Darren Kennedy.
TropiCali split up before the track was finished, but Maya continued producing it and added the backing vocals of Gringas Kate (also former TropiCali member) and Diana, as well as the trumpet of Mario Alberto Silva. Special shout-outs to those who helped with the engineering: Jenny Thornburg, Ryan Kleeman, Robin Applewood, Nathan Bauld.

The song will be available for download on our website and in all major online stores as of November 12.

The artwork for the single, done by Maya, is a mixed media piece using mostly recycled materials.

Come celebrate with us at our release party at El Rio in SF on November 12!!
